The Rogers Sporting Goods Story
Roger’s Sporting Goods is retail supplier of hunting and fishing equipment that has operated a brick-and-mortar location in the Kansas City area for 35 years. In 2000, they launched their first eCommerce site, which became outdated and was inhibiting planned growth. Donald MacCormick, the company’s eCommerce Manager, contacted Classy Llama to explore how we could help. They felt they needed an improved site design and wanted a contemporary shopping experience for their customers. In addition, the company’s staff was looking for better admin tools to manage the online store. Magento Commerce was chosen as the foundational platform that would allow them to scale and grow into the future.
Roger’s was anxious to get their new site launched. Fortunately, Classy Llama was able to offer accelerator software to quickly develop a clean custom site design which included many great UX features that augmented Magento UX. This software was built on top of Magento’s mobile responsive framework to provide a fantastic shopping experience on any size device, something Roger’s didn’t have and really needed. Also, Magento’s native integration with SOLR search was employed to provide custom navigation for the 285 brands sold on the site. And the new site included a streamlined checkout process with a pickup-in-store option.
Roger’s uses “Scout” software for inventory management. Integrating this software with Magento was another important part of the project. The Llama team built an integration that provided regular inventory and shipment updates to Magento and allowed Magento to provide updated order information to Scout. We also built enhancements to Magento’s robust admin panel. Site administrators now have the ability to set complex shipping rules. They can also perform batch order processing and flag orders for review based on specific criteria. And Barcodes can be printed on packing slips for quick scan into the inventory management system.
When we complete a project, Classy Llama feels it’s important to have provided solid value to our client, and we really felt this way about the work we did with Roger’s Sporting Goods. Successfully supporting their move from a much outdated platform to Magento would have been a win on its own. But we also had the opportunity to help the Roger’s team “know what they didn’t know” about solutions to problems their internal staff and customers had been struggling with for some time. All within a budget they could live with, within a timeline they needed.
